Am I covered if I have less than 12 months’ service?
Usually not under the Unfair Dismissals Acts, which generally require 12 months’ continuous service — but there are exceptions (pregnancy, trade union membership, and other specific protected grounds) where no minimum service applies. If you’re unsure whether an exception applies, a solicitor or Citizens Information can confirm.
How long do I have to bring this complaint?
Six months from the date of the contravention under Section 41(6) of the Workplace Relations Act 2015. If you're close to that deadline, an extension to 12 months can be sought under Section 41(8) where reasonable cause for the delay can be shown.
